From One Meal a Day to Empowerment: Lethukhuthula's Story of Hope Through the Urban Cash Transfer Program
By Leana Padera (Communications Graduate Intern)
Lethukhuthula Ncube from Mzilikazi district in Bulawayo faced numerous hardships. Despite working tirelessly in part-time jobs, the small payments she received were insufficient to support her family of nine. The burden of poverty weighed heavily on her, until she found hope through the World Vision Zimbabwe Implemented Urban Cash Based Transfer program funded by World Food Programme's (WFP).
Her family used to survive on one meal per day and this affected the children’s health. It was heart-breaking for her knowing that sometimes her children found it difficult to fit in at school since they always had to wear worn out uniforms. Sometimes, they couldn't even attend school because she couldn't afford to pay their fees. This struggle seemed endless and was truly heart-breaking.
Then, in September 2022, everything changed. Lethukhuthula became a recipient of the Urban Cash Transfer program a lifeline that brought new found stability and hope to her family.
With each family member receiving US$13 per month, Lethukhuthula decides on how to use the money as the head of the family. She prioritises the money she receives on basic food commodities, and school supplies for her children, giving them a chance to excel in their education.
The impact of the program extended far beyond financial assistance. Lethukhuthula has found herself with more time to spend with her children and not work all the time. She has even managed to join an informal savings pool with other women, where funds are contributed in rotation, allowing participants lump sums for family needs and projects.
As she shared her story, Lethukhuthula’s smile radiated with pride and determination.
"We are a group of five, ladies,” she said “and together, we are raising money to start projects”.
The WFP Urban Cash Based Transfer program has proven to be a powerful tool in alleviating the negative effects of poverty as it enhances empowerment and individuals like Lethukhuthula can actively care for themselves and their children.
World Vision Zimbabwe takes pride in its commitment to assist communities in need, bringing real and sustainable change to those who need it the most.
