Rewriting Futures: How the GEMS Project is Transforming Girls' Education at Guwe High School

At Guwe High School in Nkayi District, a powerful transformation is taking place. The Girls Education Mentoring & Support (GEMS) Project has become a beacon of hope, empowering young girls through education, skills training, mentorship, and economic support.
Guwe High School is one of 18 schools benefiting from the GEMS Project, and the impact is undeniable. In 2023, World Vision Zimbabwe, assisted the school by constructing a low-cost boarding house.
Before this, many girls had to walk long distances to school, which negatively impacted their academic performance. Since the boarding house officially opened in 2024, the school’s pass rate has increased from 13% to 29.51%, a significant improvement.
"I am amazed at how our pass rate has improved, and I strongly believe we will surpass 29.51% over time. Other schools are learning from us, and it is very motivating," said Jabulani Tshuma, the school headmaster.

In addition to providing accommodation, the project is supporting six girls who passed their O-levels but lacked the financial means to continue their education. Tshuma recalled how heartbreaking it was to see bright young girls forced to drop out due to financial struggles.
"World Vision Zimbabwe approached us about the girls’ situation and asked if we could accommodate them. That truly touched me. It is painful when a child is academically gifted but has no means to pursue their dreams," he said, shaking his head.
To promote sustainability, the school launched an income-generating poultry project with 200 chicks to support vulnerable learners. Additionally, 200 textbooks were provided, ensuring that students have access to learning materials that will help them excel in their studies.
For students like Langelihle, an O-level learner at Guwe High, this support has made a world of difference. With a bright smile, she expressed her excitement over receiving the textbooks.

"Receiving the textbooks has made a huge difference in our studies. Now, I can read ahead, understand my lessons better, and prepare for exams with confidence," she shared.
The impact of the GEMS Project goes beyond academics. The initiative has also introduced girls’ clubs, where students receive mentorship and guidance on navigating challenges both in school and in life. These clubs are shaping them into confident, responsible young women who are ready to create a better future for themselves.

"We are pleased with the school's progress since we started working with them. Our goal is to empower young girls with education, mentorship, and skills to help them face the real world," said Nkonzwenhle Mlotshwa, the project’s Monitoring & Evaluation Officer.
With each passing day, the GEMS Project is transforming the lives of young girls at Guwe High School, proving that when girls are given the right support, they can overcome challenges and achieve greatness. By investing in their education, we are shaping the future of an empowered generation.
