Day of the African Child
Make schools a safe place for the 19 million children in Sudan
90% of school-aged children in Sudan are deprived of their right to education
Sudan is on the brink of the worst education crisis in the world, with the majority of schools closed. Education supplies are lacking, facilities have not been maintained and most are now dilapidated.
Many schools across the country have been converted into shelters or damaged, complicating efforts to resume educational activities and secure safe learning environments for students. Violent attacks on schools and education facilities in Sudan have increased fourfold since the start of the conflict.
The grim current reality for children in Sudan
Make schools a safe place for the 19 million children in Sudan
Apart from access to education, conflict has a detrimental effect on children’s mental well-being. An entire generation of children in Sudan is at risk. Not having access to education has devastating effects on the well-being of children and society which exacerbates the already desperate situation millions of children are facing.
No access to schools also means it is more challenging for children to receive life-saving protection services.
For the children of Sudan, it has been over a year without access to education. This Day of the African Child, World Vision calls on all leaders to make schools a safer place for the children of Sudan.
