Bitter Harvest

The potential of Romania's agricultural sector is going unrealized, a situation threatening to deny millions of small farmers the prosperity others are realizing since EU membership in 2007.

Romania's ascension to EU membership in 2007 was ripe with promise but two years later millions of its citizens are still missing out on the bonanza. Farmers comprise 45% of the population and occupy nearly 40% of the land. They are undermined by Bureaucracy, government inaction and their own inability to work together. Yet in the right environment agriculture could flourish and place Romania on a par with western neighbours.
