First Lady Braves Heavy Rains to Witness WV Works in Twachiyanda ADP
The First Lady of the Republic of Zambia Mrs Esther Lungu last Friday braved heavy rains to visit Jonathan Sim Chikanta Secondary School in Twachiyanda ADP in Chief Chikanta's area in the southern region.
Mrs Lungu who toured Jonathan Sim secondary school solar- powered computer lab, solar mechanized borehole and dormitories appreciated the social transformation developmental work taking place in Chikanta chiefdom in Kalomo district.
“My office appreciates the roles that various stakeholders such as government, traditional leadership, various churches and in particular WV Zambia are undertaking to ensure that the well-being of children in the households within the communities is achieved,” she said.
The first lady who pledged to continue partnering with the organisation said the government of Zambia is aware of the many challenges the many rural communities such as Chief Chikanta’s are faced with and will continue to partner with various partners to attain the sustainable development goals.
Mrs Lungu who had a briefing with WV Zambia National Director, Mr Mark Kelly applauded government partnership with WV whose fruits can be seen through the transformation of over 40,000 people of Chikanta's area, mostly the marginalized.
And Mr Kelly said the Christian, relief development and advocacy organisation aims at partnering with communities, the government, traditional leadership and other stakeholders in the country to alleviate the effects of poverty through a broad range of interventions that include clean water, education, a secure income for families among others.
“It is through these interventions that we seek to ensure that children and families thrive and are able to reach their full potential,” Mr Kelly said.
He also restated WV’s belief that every child deserves clean water as evidenced from over 200 boreholes with hand pumps which have been constructed and a further four mechanized boreholes with solar pumps which have been installed for higher yields in large communities.
He however emphasized the many opportunities that education provides for growth, poverty reduction, employment, productivity and human development.
“This is why as an organisation we continue to demonstrate our efforts bringing a lasting change to vulnerable children by improving the quality of education through literacy education built on the principles of access, quality and equity,” He said.
