Our communicator in Battambang province, Solina Kong, regularly travels to remote villages. During the trip, she meets registered children and you will be suprised by different stories that she hears.
Sombo, 8, wants to work at the airport in the future so she can earn a decent living and invest in new technology such as an iPad, laptop, and camera. She mentions she loves taking photos. “I see teacher (World Vision staff) takes videos and makes stories of kids like me, and I want to take videos of other people too,” she says.
As other children are playing with the toys in the group, 5 years old Bros is sitting alone playing a puzzle game. When asked why he is playing alone, he hesitates and says, “I have no friends”.
7 years old Samnang is currently studying in grade 2. She is also ranked number 2 in her class. Samnang says her parents rewarded her by taking her to visit Battambang town, and the capital city Phnom Penh. Speaking to World Vision staff she teases “I will bring you there when I grow up, but please bring your money along with you”.
Solina, World Vision communications staff, asks children what they love the most among the three activities in children club. 9 out of 10 children says they love painting the most.
7 years old Sreyleak and Sreyleap are twins, and like most twins they are competitive. Sreyleap brags that she is good at math while Sreyleak laughs and responds saying that she is better at literature, and “I am more clever than my sister”.
Vichhay was born in a big family. He has 8 brothers and sisters. His father works in Thailand with 2 older brothers. His mother helps earn additional income by selling bananas; but sometimes fellow villagers take the bananas, saying that they’ll pay her next time. Vichay recalls, “When we don’t have enough food, my mother doesn't eat for herself but keeps everything for us."
Solina, World Vision communications staff, meets a boy who drew a picture of Gangnam Style. Asking how he know about this, the boy replies that he knows the famous dance from watching TV and he loves it so much. However, the boy says he does not want to be a film star like the Gangnam style singer, but he wants to be a doctor so that he can help all villagers who have illnesses such as coughs, colds, and fever.
