Mozambique: Humanitarian Partners Launch Urgent Funding Appeal to Assist Over 100,000 impacted by Cyclone Chido
A Platform of Humanitarian Partners comprising humanitarian organizations World Vision Mozambique, Plan International, ADRA, and CARE, is aiming to assist more than 100,000 people stricken by Cyclone Chido in northern Mozambique. At least 45 people have been killed, with over 180 000 impacted in the provinces of Nampula and Cabo Delgado.
The platform needs to secure around 18 million dollars to enable interventions and thus ensure urgent provision of food, shelter, water, sanitation and hygiene, and protection. Further assessments are ongoing and may reveal even more dire needs than those so far identified.
Katia dos Santos Dias, CARE Mozambique Country Director, urged: “Aid needs to be provided as soon as possible, given that we are in the rainy season and the fact that many of these communities are already in a state of extreme vulnerability due to armed conflict and food insecurity.” There is also the fear of outbreaks of cholera and other water-borne diseases due to the deterioration of the already precarious hygiene and sanitation conditions. Most immediate measures include the soon to start distribution of tents, cooking utensils, and water purifiers to the affected communities.
“This building of synergies and partnership is not new and aims to further strengthen our capacity to respond to the needs of the communities we are called to serve,” said World Vision Mozambique’s Country Director Carolina da Silva.
Members of the platform have operations in the districts most affected by the cyclone, namely Memba and Eráti in Nampula province and Chiúre, Metuge, and Mecúfi in Cabo Delgado province.
