World Vision Mozambique Aiming to Assist 75,000 Cyclone-Stricken People in Mozambique
- Priorities are food, water, hygiene and sanitation, shelter and protection
- US$1.2 million needed
World Vision is planning to reach up to 75,000 people, particularly children, affected by Tropical Cyclone Chido in the provinces of Cabo Delgado and Nampula, in northern Mozambique. The organization urgently seeks US$1.2 to provide critical assistance, including food, shelter, water, sanitation and hygiene, and protection. At least 27 people have died, and thousands have been displaced after losing their homes.
World Visions’ response will contribute towards mitigating Cyclone Chido’s devastating impact, which is exacerbated by chronic food insecurity, and an armed conflict in parts of the region. It is feared that worsening hygiene conditions may lead to fresh outbreaks of cholera and other waterborne diseases.
World Vision’s most immediate priorities include the distribution of tents for shelter, kitchen ware, water purifiers to affected communities. Coordination efforts are ongoing between the Government and nongovernmental organizations, and United Nations agencies, with World Vision providing technical input.
Furthermore, World Vision is supporting a planned multi-agency rapid assessment, whilst working in close collaboration with likeminded agencies like CARE, ADRA and Plan International to address the urgent needs of the impacted communities.
