The Solomon Islands is made up of 992 islands in nine provinces. Cultural diversity is evident in the 75 languages spoken, with pijin English understood by most. Literacy rates are low, with more than half the Solomon Islands’ population functionally illiterate, meaning they lack the skills to read shop signs, prices or health clinic notices. As a result the process of educational reform in Solomon Islands has a strong focus on improving literacy rates.
