Edjana, the voice of children in decision-making
Edjana never imagined she would become such a powerful advocate for children and youth. Growing up in a village on the outskirts of Durrës, where opportunities for the younger generation were scarce, she had excelled in school but felt limited by her surroundings. However, everything changed two years ago when she became involved with IMPACT youth groups.
"This experience has transformed my life. I used to be timid and afraid to speak up. Now, I freely voice my opinions and advocate for solutions to community issues. IMPACT has changed me, and I'm determined to change the community too," shares the 17-year-old.
Alongside her peers, Edjana has spearheaded community initiatives focusing on gender equality, inclusivity, combating bullying, internet safety, and environmental protection. Recently, she has been involved in an initiative to provide free online services for citizens, recognising that not all residents in her community have internet access.
"One initiative that our IMPACT group is considering involves providing the community access to the school's computer room. This space could be utilised for accessing services from E-albania, various applications, or information. Many residents lack internet access, and obtaining online certificates requires them to travel to the city," explains Edjana, underscoring the reason behind the initiative.
Since last October, Edjana has been the voice of children and youth in the highest echelons of the local government of Durrës municipality. She was selected to serve on the Local Youth Council, comprising engaged, creative, and energetic youth. This council acts as an advisory body, working closely with the Mayor.
"The Local Youth Council serves as a platform where we can advocate for issues affecting us as youth. We hold meetings with the mayor to address concerns regarding children and youth in our communities. Being part of IMPACT has enhanced my ability to articulate the needs of children and youth to institutions responsible for drafting youth policies," she explains.
"The Local Youth Council provides youth with the chance to initiate and participate in policy-making processes that directly impact their lives and the environment they inhabit," she adds.
Now, Edjana not only spearheads initiatives through IMPACT groups but also influences the local youth policies of Durrës Municipality by advocating for change to decision-makers.
"I want every child and youth to have a voice. I want to find solutions to every issue that affects children and youth. I want our voices to be heard, regardless of whether we live in rural areas or cities," concludes Edjana. She enjoys reading and aspires to become a doctor in the future, aiming to provide quality services for citizens, especially children and the elderly.
Through the IMPACT model, World Vision Albania collaborates with 200 youths in Durrës, assisting them in building skills, competencies, and empowering them to actively participate in social and economic life within their communities. Over the last four years, World Vision Albania has supported 542 community initiatives led by youth themselves.
