Severe malnutrition increasing among Somali children
More children are facing severe malnutrition as the drought across Somalia worsens. The drought has forced mothers like Faadumo in Baidoa, southern Somalia to abandon their homes in rural areas to seek support in makeshift settlements for displaced people. More than 213,000 people are in catastrophic levels of food insecurity - just one step away from famine.
At least 200 children have died of malnutrition centres since January this year. The UN has warned that 1.5 million children under five years old, across Somalia face the risk of severe malnutrition, of these nearly 386,000 are likely to be severely malnourished by the end of 2022.
