From Vice to Virtue, My Transformation through the Kids Club
Compiled by: Amponsah Daniel, Sponsorship Officer
"Engaging in social vices within the community was once a part of my life. Skipping classes to take care of my traps or indulging in other unhealthy activities seemed to be the norm. However, everything changed when I joined the Kids Club in June 2013.
Through Kids Club, I have been exposed to a wealth of knowledge and experience. One particular area of learning was basic fire prevention methods. Armed with this knowledge, I was able to educate my family on essential safety measures to protect children in our community. The Kids' Club that World Vision introduced to my community has empowered me as an educator to spread awareness and make a real difference.
In addition to fire prevention, the Kids Club also introduced me to toll-free lines of the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU). This vital information empowered me with the ability to report incidents of abuse at home directly to the police. Through this initiative, I have become an agent of change, helping to address the pressing issue of domestic violence within our community. Inspired by this opportunity, I shared the toll-free number with 40 other children in my class, ensuring that they too, have the means to report and seek help when needed. Such initiatives ensure the safety and well-being of children as we stand united against domestic violence.
My guidance and counselling coordinator, Alexander played a crucial role in my transformation. Recognising the need for academic focus, I was advised to take my studies more seriously. I took this advice and stopped engaging in vices such as setting traps. Focusing on my studies has been challenging, particularly when it comes to catching up with classes and lessons.
However, my determination and the support I receive from the Kids’ Club has helped me to overcome these obstacles as evidenced by my recent General Science class test, where I ranked 18th out of 45 students in JHS 2. I am proving that hard work and dedication can yield positive results. Within the classroom walls, I nurture my dream of becoming a medical doctor, which the Kids Club has instilled and encouraged within me.
The Kids’ Club has infused me with hope, not only for myself but also for other children. I have taken on the role of an advocate for Kids’ Club activities, actively participating in various campaigns to encourage my peers to return to school and become agents of change. By sharing my own transformational story, I inspire others to believe in their potential and actively engage in positive action. Through the Kids’ Club, I have discovered the power in me to become a changemaker and bring about meaningful change within my community.
