Tropical Cyclone Jude Makes Landfall in Mozambique, Threatening Thousands

By António Massipa, Regional Communications and Advocacy Coordinator
Tropical Cyclone Jude has made landfall in Mozambique, bringing with it the threat of severe devastation. The National Institute of Meteorology (INAM) confirmed that the storm, which intensified from a severe tropical storm in the Mozambique Channel, reached the mainland through Mossuril district in Nampula province in the early hours of Monday, 10th March 2025.
While comprehensive damage assessments are expected to take place in the coming hours, the National Institute for Disaster Risk Management and Reduction (INGD) has anticipated that approximately 350,000 people in the provinces of Nampula, Cabo Delgado, and Zambezia are at risk of being affected by Cyclone Jude.
Residents report significant impacts on the area stretching from Mossuril to Monapo, including widespread destruction of homes, infrastructure, and access roads. Preliminary figures from rapid impact assessments are expected to be released on Tuesday, following the cyclone's passage.
Humanitarian Response Underway
Humanitarian organizations are mobilizing to respond to the unfolding crisis. Angelo Pontes, Humanitarian and Emergency Affairs Manager at World Vision stated that the organization is actively monitoring the situation and preparing to activate its contingency plan. World Vision intends to establish a base in Monapo to provide essential assistance to affected populations. The organization plans to participate in rapid needs assessments alongside other agencies and, if necessary, redirect existing activities in operational areas to address the urgent needs arising from Cyclone Jude.
Concerns and Challenges
INGD has acknowledged that its current resources are only sufficient to assist around 65,000 individuals, raising serious concerns about the scale of the potential humanitarian crisis. The significant gap between the number of people at risk and the current aid capacity highlights the urgent need for additional resources and support. The full extent of the damage caused by Cyclone Jude remains to be seen, but the potential for widespread displacement and suffering is a major concern.
