Water, Sanitation and Hygiene

 
What we want to do: 

We want to see all children enjoy access to clean water and improved sanitation facilities close to their homes so that they can stay well. We are working towards this by:

  • Ensuring safe and equitable access to clean water for all 
  • Increasing the number of households with access to improved sanitation facilities
What is the problem? 

Diarrhea, one of the leading cause of death for children under 5 in Mauritania, is closely linked to the poor quality of water used for consumption and the lack of knowledge of proper hygiene coupled with a lack of access to proper sanitation facilities.

How is World Vision addressing the issues? 

We are educating and catalyzing communities to live healthier through the creation of community-led sanitation committees, providing the necessary infrastructure, such as latrines and hand-washing stations at public locations, like schools and health clinics, as well as building and rehabilitating water points.

Is what World Vision doing working? 

Yes! We have also noted that increased access has contributed to a notable decrease in the prevalence of diarrhea and malnutrition among children under 5.

What’s the impact?*
  • 568 families educated in the importance of proper hygiene and sanitation built their own latrines
  • 47 latrines built or rehabilitated in 19 health posts and 6 schools
  • 6 schools and 2 health posts equipped with special areas for girls and women who are menstruating
  • 9,386 people gained access to clean water through the drilling of 3 boreholes
  • 14 WASH committees established and equipped to manage and/or repair boreholes
